Across the board, my students loved this website. It is a creative method of teaching writing skills and story construction, through a medium most kids can relate to. It’s simple enough that my students taught each other in my fifth grade student-directed unit on Web 2.0 Communication tools–a six-week unit where they taught each other eighteen fascinating web-based communication tools.

Saving the ZimmerTwin videos was a problem and I’ll explain why. It’s difficult to get fifth graders signed onto a website that requires not only a specific log-in, but verification via email (though see my work-around under Tech Tip #103). My fifth graders don’t have school emails, so I was dependent upon home-based emails which was not very successful. Students could create the video, but not save it, which meant they couldn’t share it.

My eighth graders came up with a work-around. One organizational note: Be sure that you (or your students) teach Jing and it’s screencast tools prior to ZimmerTwins. That will be required to completed this exercise. You’re going to love this:

To upload movie to the student’s wiki page:

  • Create Zimmer Twin video
  • Use Jing to take a video of the video (unfortunately, no sound)
  • Save the file to the network folder (it’ll be a swf file)
  • upload file to wiki page
